Looking For Work

New Process Gear announced Wednesday its plans to close its plant in Dewitt, which employs 1,400 people. With manufacturing jobs becoming more and more scarce, where do they go from here?

Most often, they go right to the classified ads. Today, we tried it out, to see what jobs around Syracuse were getting the most attention, and who was applying. Many of these jobs require very little experience, and after some brief training, can bloom into well-paying careers.

Skim through the classifieds and you’ll see ads promising $800 a week… “no experience needed.” You could be a bartender, a mechanic, or a truck driver. With recent layoffs at Syracuse China and the imminent closing of New Process Gear, we started calling around. When the economy takes a turn for the worse, the National Tractor Trailer School in Liverpool tends to see an overflow of new students. Within your first year, you could make up to $40,000. With each year, salaries continue to increase. Along with the NTTS, the Bartender’s Professional Training Institute in Liverpool is seeing a 25% bump in class size. It costs $375 for the 40 hour course, but in a city the size of Syracuse, you could be making up to $50,000.

That job posting for $800 a week? It’s actually an outside sales job for Barrier Window Systems in East Syracuse and Westmoreland. The woman we spoke with said she’s already heard from a lot of local people who have recently lost jobs in the manufacturing industry. While these jobs are becoming few and far between, you might be surprised at what you’ll find hidden in the classifieds.
