Classified websites in the Middle East are reporting sharp increases in advertising revenue as clients seek to target consumers more specifically. Portals such as Souq.com, Dubizzle and the jobs site Bayt.com say they have seen large increases in revenue, with the detailed user information collected by such sites proving attractive to advertisers.

Nokia Beta Labs has taken the wraps off a new service, Nokia Listings, that is currently available only in the Indian market. Listings are available for three main classifieds formats – Jobs (from ‘Maid who can cook’ to ‘legal’), (Hyper) Local Services, and products (Buy and Sell). However, the ability to browse existing listings does not exist, and I think that is primarily down to Nokia using SMS as a carrier instead of GPRS: thus, live results aren’t available. Nokia Listings primarily targets the Series 40 handsets, but also works for non-touch screen Series 60 (S60) handsets.

SAN JOSE, Calif. & SEOUL, South Korea - eBay Inc. and Young Bae Ku, the founder of Gmarket, Korea's leading e-commerce company acquired by eBay in 2009, today announced a joint venture agreement to expand Gmarket's existing online marketplaces in Japan and Singapore. The agreement will strengthen eBay's presence in Japan and Singapore -- where the e-commerce markets are expected to grow by 30% and 13% respectively between 2009 and 2012--and provide a foundation for longer term expansion of Gmarket into other Asian markets.

Chinese online classifieds site 58.com announced today that its second-round funding, mainly from Doll Capital Management (DCM) and SAIF Partners, totaled USD 15 mln. CEO Yao Jinbo did not reveal the company’s new equity structure following the investment, but said that 58.com has retained control over the company, and that the funds raised will be mainly used towards expansion in second- and third-tier cities nationwide.
