With unemployment at 10 percent nationwide, getting a new job is difficult. It often comes down to who you know. That’s where social networking sites like Twitter come in.

Charles Martin says it takes him only eight seconds to apply for a job after learning about it on TweetMyJobs.com, one of his favorite job search engines, including Gettele Communications Jobs, Its My Job, and Tech Jobs.

To apply for a job through Tweet My Jobs, he signs up with Twitter and begins to follow one of 6,000 job channels. In his case, it’s telecommunications work he’s seeking.

“As soon as the job comes open, just two clicks and you’re applied,” Martin says. In just a month, he’s already heard from a couple of potential employers.

Tweet My Jobs founder Gary Zukowski says the ability to apply for a job immediately after it’s posted is important in this economy, with so many job seekers vying for so few jobs.

“With the economy the way it is these days, we hear from companies all the time that they’re shutting off their resume applicants, or the number of resumes they get after the first 50, because they get so many applicants per job,” Zukowski said.

In the last 30 days alone, the site has sent out more than one million job Tweets to some 145,000 Twitter followers.

And when some of those followers gain fresh employment through the site, Zukowski says it shows sites like Twitter are here to stay.

“Social media is not just a fad, it’s not going to go away next week,” Zukowski said. “It’s not about where you had dinner or what movie you just saw, it is an actual practical application of social media.”

The site also allows users to Tweet their resumes so that employers can search for qualified new hires. And it provides career advice.
