WASHINGTON – Strayer University, which normally charges for classes, offered a free one, today. It was a 90-minute seminar on job hunting in the modern economy.
Author and consultant Malcolm Munro led what he calls a “career power workshop.”
Munro believes serious job seekers will look beyond newspaper classifieds and online lists. Munro told attendees they should network as much as possible.
“Your job search is an eight hour a day process,” he told a classroom full of students and visitors. “Spend 60 to 80 percent of your day out meeting people, whether it’s through your association, your sporting events, your kids’ events, [where] you go to worship on Sunday.”
By networking, people can learn of opportunities even before ads are placed.
Malcolm Munro also believes in a positive attitude. [Job seekers] need to be optimistic and positive. With this many people looking for work, you’ll stand out the more optimistic and the more energized that you are.”
Strayer University handed out lists of on-line resources for job seekers.
