Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services are one of the key driving forces behind revenue growth in mobile Web 2.0 applications, a new report has suggested.
Juniper research, a telecoms analyst firm, found that “presence-enabled communities”, such as mobile VoIP, will be the predominant market force behind a revenue increase to $18.9 billion across the sector in 2014.
Further areas driving growth include social networking, chat and professional applications.
Ian Chard, the author of the report, said that the rise of mobile VoIP was threatening traditional revenue streams of the network operators and that innovation would be required to survive.
“A confluence of Web 2.0 concepts and end-user behaviour….is driving mobile Web adoption and shaping industry development,” he said.
“The distinction between service provider roles is becoming less clear cut, meaning some commercial allies are finding themselves increasingly polarised as the market progresses.”
Demand for cloud computing network solutions is being driven by increased use of smartphones and Web 2.0 applications, the report also revealed.
By 2013, In-Stat, an industry intelligence organisation, has predicted that there will be almost 300 million VoIP users.
