eBay-owned online classifieds site Gumtree has appointed PHD to its media account as it seeks to double its users and ramp up marketing.
PHD has already been working with Gumtree on a project basis and the appointment will formalise the relationship. more…

The premise for Pat Kolek, COO of eBay Classifieds Group, wanting to speak to us was, we were told, to discuss the growing trend of consumer to consumer selling on eBay. Isn’t that what eBay has always done, we thought, well apparently not.
First, let’s tackle the difference between normal eBay and Classifieds. The latter not only lacks the auction element, it’s often free to the seller. eBay is launching a community court feature on its Dutch online classifieds site Marktplaats.nl, which it acquired in 2004. The feature will allow users to challenge negative ratings they receive and let a “jury” of other users decide whether to remove the feedback.

When I went to meet up with eBay at last week’s CES conference, I went to a booth run not by that company, but by a company called RedLaser. Started by two U of Michigan grads, RedLaser is an eBay acquisition that has released a barcode scanning app for the iPhone that will scan your products and give you back consumer information about them. eBay has announced that global mobile sales generated nearly $2 billion in 2010, up from $600 million in 2009. To be clear, we’re not talking revenues here but gross merchandise volume. Nevertheless, a clear sign that mobile ecommerce has reached a tipping point.
eBay earlier announced that global sales were up 166 percent to $230 million from Nov. 25 to Dec. 25 from the same period last year, so the holiday season was a clear catalyst for much of that growth. more…

Google has just purchased Groupon for $2.5 billion, according to an unnamed insider who spoke with VatorNews. Neither Google nor Groupon could be reached for comment to confirm the report, but Vator’s source is reliable and the report falls in line with the recent string of Groupon acquisition rumors.
Talk about a possible acquisition by Google has been bubbling since November 19, when rumors first emerged that Google had made an offer of some $2 billion to $3 billion. The rumors were first reported by Kara Swisher of All Things D, who claimed that Google and Groupon were already in acquisitions discussions. more…
