NY: Stimulus-related Jobs Available

Companies hired by New York state to work on economic stimulus-related projects are being required to make public all job openings created by those developments.

Available jobs must be advertised by the contracted companies on the state’s Job Bank Web site, www.labor.state.ny.us, in order for each contracted company to receive payment via stimulus money. In turn, the state Labor Department will help match job-seekers with available jobs created by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. more…

Governments Eye Public Notices On the Internet

RALEIGH, N.C. — The tough economy means the growing suburb of Apex can’t replace some computers and police vehicles. So the town’s mayor is pleased to save $13,000 by posting public notices of rezoning requests and major land development plans on the town’s Web site, rather than in the local newspaper.

“This was good for us for this year, that we didn’t have to include that advertising cost in our budget,” said Keith Weatherly, mayor of the Raleigh suburb of 35,000, which has an annual budget of $27 million. more…

Speaker Ben Lujan’s Bill Could Exacerbate Newspaper Woes

What are already hard times for New Mexico newspapers could get worse under a bill sponsored by House Speaker Ben Lujan, D-Nambé.

House Bill 895 would allow the publication of legal notices via television or radio in addition to newspapers. Currently, such notices must be published in newspapers, and that’s a major source of revenue for a struggling industry. Craigslist, which publishes classifieds online for free, has already taken lots of other classified advertising revenue from newspapers, and many papers’ classifieds are now anchored by legal notices.
