We all use social media networks to engage people and get our brand out there. I use Twitter more for sharing interests, discussing sports, and for some of my more geeky interests (like sci-fi). Facebook is a mix of friends, family, and business contacts. LinkedIn is all business.

You should use LinkedIn to increase your network reach, get brand exposure for your business, and position yourself as an expert in your field. When you do those three things, then vendors, customers and possible business partners will come to you.

Online social networking sites such as Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn and so on may be proving popular in their own right, but it seems the current trend is for users to sign up to Facebook. Since it’s initial launch in 2004, the site has expanded to over 500 million subscribers worldwide. It seems that this can be backed up by the latest statistical information gathered by Vincenzo Cosenza’s “World Map Of Social Networks.”

By creating your own profile page, you can find and contact friends, send messages, receive notifications, update and share photos, join groups of interest and so on. Although Facebook has had it’s fair share of positive comments such as the introduction of “Places,” in some cases it’s the negative issues such as “Privacy” that have dominated the spotlight in months gone by.

No matter how successful and monopolistic Facebook gets, no matter how many awesome features Mark Zuckerberg announces in Palo Alto or how many ex-presidents he interviews, none of it appears to be slowing down LinkedIn, the social network that doesn't want to be known as a social network -- the one that's about having, getting and keeping a job.
