As Kean reaches the middle of the semester, students are anxious for it to come to an end. Many students are planning extravagant summer vacations, while others will be taking summer classes or interning. The summer brings lots of fun to everyone: the parties, the beaches, the sunny days and breezy nights are all very attractive. However, with graduation right around the corner and student loan payments approaching, many seniors are in a frantic effort to find a job, or better yet, a career.

In this current state of the economy, many students may be in fear of not finding the perfect job right after graduation. With the unemployment rate at its highest, 9.7, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, seniors face an increasingly competitive workforce. However, there is no need to worry; many jobs are open to hiring recent graduates without experience. Because the economy is at a low, companies cannot afford to pay the salaries that experienced and educated employees demand. The chances for graduates to land a job after graduation is now greater than it was in the past.

By now, seniors should have an idea of what they want to do and should be focusing on three main points: where they want to live, what type of position, and possible employers.. Students should also begin preparing resumes. Kean University offers its students a career center located on the first floor of the Maxine and Jack Lane Center for Academic Success. Career Development and Advancement offers services and resources aimed at helping students and alumni make career decisions and conduct their job searches. Individual career counseling, resume/cover letter critiquing, on-campus recruitment, mock interviews, and personality test are just some of the services offered. For more information about career development and advancement students can visit CAS room 123, call 908-737-0320 or email career@kean.edu.

Students can also use other outlets when searching for jobs. Websites like monster.com and careerbuilder.com provide services to help the public find jobs. After filling out a brief questionnaire and posting a resume and cover letter students can receive emails about jobs in their area of interest. Kean has partnered with collegecentral.com so students can have these services for free. Craigslist.com allows employers from all sectors to post job listing everyday, these listing are available for free to all. Students can also look in newspapers and to any influential connections to get their feet in the door.

With the perfect resume and cover letter, as well as interviewing skills, students graduating in May should have no problems finding a place for employment. Do not be discouraged. If students stay motivated and focused, finding a job will come easy. These past years of hard work are not in vain. Put that degree to use and make some money.
